I had these two Dead Like Me ficlets that I had written this past summer and I totally forgot to post them so I'm doing it now for anyone who's interested. And the FIC MEME was done today to help spark the muse, but I don't know how successful it was. :)

Author:
[livejournal.com profile] turquoisetumult
Disclaimer: I don't own Dead Like Me or its characters.
Warning: This is unbeta-ed. But it should be a-okay to read considering English is my first language and all... Nevertheless, even though I reread it, if someone notices a mistake (typo or other), let me know and I’ll fix it.

Title: drug of choice
Rating:
PG-13, for discussion of drugs
Word Count: 359
Characters/Pairings: Mason, Mason/George
Genre: character study, romance
Prompt: “she's got me high”
Summary: Mason’s got a new addiction in George. “The feeling of that chase, that beautiful chase to obtain that permanent high and keep it always, has awoken inside of you once more. // And like that, you’ve found a new drug."

Ultimately, you were in it for the chase.

You just liked it, you know?

You liked the excitability of the moment, (when the cannabis has just settled in, the world mapped out for you in the newest shapes and brightest colors, eager for exploration).

Yet, you couldn’t deny the relief it gave you either. The comfort of that moment – that moment when you finally felt at peace. Serenity, if only for a limited time, was yours to have and you were grateful for that.

But most of all, you liked the endless tease. (Every high brought you infinite joy and you thought it would never end. When it did, you saw it as just another reason to entrap it – to catch that permanent high and keep it forever.)

You watch Georgie-girl sometimes. Usually when she’s doing a daily routine (ordering a coffee for her work or extra-extra crispy potatoes for Rube at the Der Waffel Haus) or maybe when she’s talking about Delores or her old family (– she hasn’t yet learned that she doesn’t belong with the Lasses anymore, but she will one day).

She’s the only girl that you’ve ever uttered those three scary words to … at least, with a smile on your face.

She didn’t believe you when you said them, your breath stinking of alcohol and chocolate cake. You can’t blame her … not really.

You think about her. The way the jaded old world you’ve been living – existing – in for some 40 odd years seems fresh and wonderful when you’re around her. The way she looks out for you; consoling you with soft circles on your electrocuted back; tucking a warm blanket around you when the nightmare of Ray dances in your head, refusing to let you go.

You think about how she’s come to trust you over this time. How she considers you a friend, a brother, a confidant. You think about how you consider the same of her, though the feeling of that chase, that beautiful chase to obtain that permanent high and keep it always, has awoken inside of you once more.

And like that, you’ve found a new drug.

Title: brave new world
Rating: PG-13, for language
Word Count: 248
Characters/Pairings: George
Genre: character study
Prompt: "laundry"
Summary: Newly undead, George compares her situation to a literary character. “Secretly, George wishes she didn’t feel like that stupid character in Brave New World, John or Joe or whatever the fuck his name was. Couldn’t belong – fit in – to one world or another; forever doomed. // Secretly, George wishes she wasn’t like him. Hoped she’d move on; adapt.

George liked to read.

Joy nags her to get a job or friends or some “normal” shit that George doesn’t care about; books distract her.

The world seems to be giving her a cosmic “Fuck You”; novels’ characters empathize with her, soothing her.

George sits in the basement of a now deceased Brendan Moore’s apartment building, watching the washing machine squish together his questionable sheets with a touch of Cheer.

She’s only done laundry a couple of times before and she hopes to actually get it right this time.

Secretly, George wishes for folded, crisp sheets to appear on her bed, made ready by dear old Mommy.

Secretly, George wishes she knew what happened to those clothes that she wore on the day of her death. Were they completely destroyed in the accident? Or were they the only pieces of George that survived; did her family take them home? Did her mom wash them by hand (anything to feel like she was getting her daughter back), carefully iron and hang them neatly in the closet?

Secretly, George wishes she didn’t feel like that stupid character in Brave New World, John or Joe or whatever the fuck his name was. Couldn’t belong – fit in – to one world or another; forever doomed.

Secretly, George wishes she wasn’t like him. Hoped she’d move on; adapt.

George warily lifts the lid to greet the soaked laundry and peers down, afraid to pull them out just yet.

It’s a brave new world, indeed.

FIC MEME

1. Write down the names of 10 characters.
2. Write a fic of thirty words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.

1. Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
2. Ned (Pushing Daisies)
3. Mason (Dead Like Me)
4. Victor (Dollhouse)
5. Jaye Tyler (Wonderfalls)
6. Daisy Adair (Dead Like Me)
7. Sam Winchester (Supernatural)
8. Angel (Angel)
9. Castiel (Supernatural)
10. Chuck Charles (Pushing Daisies)

---

4 and 6, First Time (Victor/Daisy Adair)

Bashful Billy loses his virginity to snooty Daisy Adair.

But in bed, she’s surprisingly sweet, gentle; he inquires why.

“Because, Billy,” Daisy replies, mournfully, “you’re the one that got away.”

7, Angst (Sam Winchester)

Sam first prayed when John brought home an unconscious and broken Dean. Ever since, Sam’s prayed for Dean’s safety from monsters.

Today, he prays to protect Dean … from Sam.

1 and 8, AU (Dean Winchester & Angel)

“Gimme one good reason why I shouldn’t chop your head off.”

A punch and Angel’s got Dean flat against the wall. “Azazel. I can help you find … and kill him.”

3, 6, and 9, Threesome (Mason/Daisy Adair/Castiel)

Mason’s stripped down, already kissing Daisy senselessly and Daisy, uninterested, is watching Castiel, awaiting her challenge of deflowering an angel.

And Castiel is sweating. Profusely. Dean’ll pay dearly for this.

5 and 10, Hurt/Comfort (Jaye Tyler/Chuck Charles)

Seeing Aaron, Chuck weeps for the times she’ll never kiss Ned.

“There … there.” Jaye reluctantly pats her shoulder.

Chuck hugs Jaye and she squirms uncomfortably. Like Ned; Chuck smiles.

1, Crack (Dean Winchester)

“What kind of ghost haunts a women’s country-club? And what idiot creates this plan!?”

“Gotta investigate somehow … … your panty-hose are crooked.”

“I hate you.”

“Yeah...” Sam sighs, gleefully.

10, Horror (Chuck Charles)

Chuck pictures Digby and her alone, at the end of the world, young, beautiful, (but so lost).

“Chuck! Coffee. Table two…”

“Okay!” she says, pulling away from her imagination’s nightmares.

5 and 9, Baby Fic (Jaye Tyler/Castiel)

“Bun in the oven,” the brass monkey nods toward Jaye’s pregnancy test.

“Great. First, it’s doing good deeds by coercion, now it’s carrying angel spawn … my life sucks.”

2 and 8, Dark (Ned & Angel)

Ned’s always welcomed sunshine (and Chuck’s smiles) to brighten his dreary life.

But Chuck’s gone and the darkly-clothed man says sunlight kills.

“C’mon,” Angel says. “Time you learn some things.”

2 and 3, Death Fic (Ned & Mason)

“…stroke killed ‘im the bloody second you touched ‘im?”

“... Yes?” Ned offers.

“… Right. Best blame everything here on booze and leave it ‘lone,” Mason slurs and leaves.

Close call…

A/N: → Those were actually really difficult to write because I kept going over the 30 word limit! I hope they turned out okay.
→ → → Feedback (positive or constructively critical) is greatly appreciated on any and all of the ficlets up above. Enjoy everyone!

I had to come check these out when I saw you post this at [livejournal.com profile] dean_sam and I saw Ned and Chuck posted. I love Pushing Daisies and just so happened to be watching season one last night. I really liked these, and I'd be like you with going over the word limit.

PD was a great show! I still miss it dearly. And any chance to combine those characters with my other beloved TV show characters was one I was going to take (even though the 30 word limit was killing me - but it helps to hear that you'd have trouble with it too. :D)

Thank you for the feedback, I'm so happy you like the drabbles...

I'm really surprised the show didn't last longer than it did. I knew several people who were watching it and unfortunately I didn't get to see it till after it was taken off air. Now I have the urge to write some PD stories though not drabbles. I don't think I could ever write something 100 words or less. I'm jealous that you were able to do it in 30 words.

Well, networks unfortunately only look at numbers (even though Nielsen is totally out-dated!) and I guess it didn't perform to its expectations! Then again, the gap between the 2 seasons was about a year and they hardly advertised for it so ... yeah, let's down go down that road, but ABC is a poopyhead in my eyes. (Please ignore that I ever used that word. lol!)

If you do end up writing PD fic, I will totally read it! So this is me encouraging you to do so! :D

I'm completely ignoring the fact you said that word :) Though I do agree. All networks can be like that.

I've been trying to come up with a decent idea and nothing is sticking. Of course this happens, as soon as I say I don't have an idea I come up with one. I'll have to do some more brainstorming, outline it and such because it's 2am right now. Nothing good comes out of me at 2am. I think I'm going to go finish watching season 1 since I haven't from the last time I mentioned it but cross your fingers in hopes that I can do the characters justice in this crazy idea of mine.

This was an awesome post!
I have never read any form of DLM fiction be it fic, ficlet or drabble. So this was a delightfully new experience. You captuted George wonderfully in the second story and as for the first I like that Mason could be more fond of George than he ever lets on. Mason/George were always my favourite.

The fic meme was great fun! I may even give it ago and I havent written fic in years. I liked Angstm Threesome, Crack & Horror best. Also Ned becoming a vampire made me all :O I dont ever want him to be the undead, and especially not hanging out with Angel. I love me Ned and I love me vampires but they SHOULD NOT MEET. *protects him* Although it would be interesting to see how his being undead affects his ability to made the dead undead. :P

Hey Lauren,

Well, DLM fic is pretty sparse so you're hardly to blame to not having read any. :) I'm really happy you enjoyed these ficlets though! I'm thrilled to hear that you think my George characterization worked and that Mason/George seemed plausible as well (I actually DON'T ship them romantically but this was a request/challenge so I'm happy that it works despite the fact that I don't actually ship them. :))

Hee, I think the SPN ones turned out pretty good too. As for the "Dark" one - I dunno. I always thought there was a hidden underlying darkness/bitterness/angst (like Chuck's immortality in "Horror!") to Pushing Daisies that might fit in really well in a darker show like Angel if a few things were tweaked. But generally speaking, Ned's life is sad enough and it shouldn't get sadder so I know where you're coming from *protects him with you* lol.

Thanks so much for the great review! I'm glad you liked them!

Ive never gone looking for any DLM fic either so that probably didnt help. :P
I dont know if I believe George/Mason could work romantically but I dont mind them being almost like siblings or super close friends. Like how I love Rube/George and their father daughter bonding.

I agree with you about PD having dark undertones. Each character has secrets and emotional burdens to bear but I wasnt really ever fond of Angel, even when he was on Buffy. I think Angelus kicks ass but Angel is just whiny and angsty and annoying and no one deserves to be stuck with him forever as a fanged undead friend, especially not Ned. Mind you if he was the undead maybe he and Chuck could be together? But yeah I think Ned doesnt need the drama of becoming a vampire, his life is complicated enough as it is.

No worries! Thankyou for posting them!

Yes, I do really enjoy the close platonic relationships on DLM. Very heartwarming.

Aww, I like Angel! I've always seen him as a redemptive figure, but I can understand how some people can see him as over-the-top. But, yeah, short of it - Ned as vampire is a no go. :)

Omg, all of these are brilliant. As a Dead Like Me, SPN, Dollhouse, and Pushing Daisies Fan. Though I liked all of the SPN-involved ones best. They all had me cracking up, except for angsty-Sam, which was shiver-worthy in only 30 words.

You're a DLM, SPN, DH, AND PD fan? AWESOME. Go Fuller, Whedon, and Kripke!!! :D

I'm really pleased to hear that you liked these! I was lucky that most of the SPN ones were humor (And Castiel really got some action in these, huh?)

angsty-Sam, which was shiver-worthy in only 30 words.

Really? That's what a compliment!

Thank you so much for the feedback. Happy you like them.

Go ahead and take it!

Honestly, I really don't know. I think it's like a meme except with fic. I stole it from this person (http://community.livejournal.com/823_emporium/8940.html). You can ask him/her, but I'm not sure if he'd know more than me.

Maybe it's my Angel love coming out, but I loved the Dean&Angel and Angel&Ned ones. Angel's especially in character, but all the characters are good. Also loved the Dean one with the country club (hilarious and nice work on the dialog to take over for the words that you couldn't write) and the Ned&Mason one (so much fun!)

Nice job, especially because this kind of thing is MAD hard! I have a hard time getting a story into 100 words and you did only 30. Excellent!

Yeah, it's great writing Angel because he's such an authoritative figure who's got all the answers (or tries help people figure it out along the way, anyway). I dunno. I miss him and his beyond-years wisdom. And I so wish he would meet Dean because ... that'd be awesome! (And Ned to an extent, but Ned's got enough weird issues to deal with that discovering the existence of vampires just make give him a panic attack. lol) Anywho, I'm really glad you liked how I wrote those two and the Dean!Crack one (mark my words, that will happen in canon one day! lol) I was unsure about the Ned/Mason one but I'm glad it worked!

It really really really was hard to keep it 30 words. I'd have a 50-60 word thing and I'd have to re-edit continuously... Still, I'm glad it seems to have worked out.

Thank you for the great feedback, hon! Glad you enjoyed these!

Thank you! I wish I could write more for each character because they're both such fascinating characters but it's difficult to get a story going for either one!

this made me lol'd :D

Eeee, I'm so glad to hear it made you LOL! I can't remember - have you seen Wonderfalls? I personally think that that is something Jaye would say should the event ever happen to her! Haha.

I'm really have to you enjoyed this, Feli (or Felis or Felix). Thank you for the feedback!

It's Felis, bb ;]
and really, I'm no writer but I know how hard it is to make a story work in only 30 words and you do a god job!
